Breakthrough Research on Industrial Safety Against Airborne Carcinogens and Emerging Pollutants

BRISA is an EU research and innovation project working to reduce workers’ exposure to hazardous airborne pollutants in energy-intensive industries.

The Challenge

Bridging the Safety Gap in European Workplaces

Across Europe, many workplaces still face harmful substances such as respirable crystalline silica, ultrafine particles, incidental nanoparticles, volatile organic compounds (tVOCs), benzene, formaldehyde, PFAS, PAHs, microplastics, and more.

Current prevention strategies, monitoring methods, and regulatory approaches are not keeping pace with the scale and complexity of these risks. BRISA closes that gap by bringing together safer materials, smarter monitoring, and practical protection measures that can be deployed on the market.

Methodology layers

BRISA applies a multi-layered methodology to reduce workers’ exposure to harmful airborne substances.

Layer 1: Intelligence and Knowledge Base

We consolidate regulatory, toxicological, and exposure intelligence into FAIR datasets and harmonised protocols to support consistent, comparable decision-making.

Layer 2: Integrated Intervention and Control

We operationalise the Hierarchy of Controls through:
• Safer substitution routes (for example low-silica feedstocks, safer binders, coated minerals, and safer recycled polymers)
• Smart monitoring using semi-fixed, wearable, and stack sensor units, combined with AI-enabled digital twins to predict risks
• Adaptive protection with continuous risk management, alerts with human involvement, and immersive training

Layer 3: Systemic Assessment and Transfer

We validate solutions across five industrial pilots (ceramics, foundry, mineral fillers, ELT recycling, and plastics recycling), combining TRL6 demonstrations with sustainability and tox/ecotox evidence, techno-economic analysis, and a quantitative scoring framework built for safety.
