Airborne particles and substances can arise during industrial production, material handling and recycling. Some may pose risks to workers’ health, while their presence can vary between tasks, locations and operating conditions, making them difficult to monitor and manage consistently.

 

BRISA responds by combining improved monitoring, predictive tools and practical worker protection in one integrated approach.

 

Current prevention strategies, monitoring methods, and regulatory approaches are not keeping pace with the scale and complexity of these risks. BRISA responds by bringing together safer materials, smarter monitoring and practical protection measures that can be tested in industry and prepared for wider uptake.

The pollutants we are tackling

Industrial processes can release harmful airborne substances.
BRISA focuses on:

• Dust and particles: respirable crystalline silica, ultrafine particles, incidental nanoparticles and microplastics.

• Organic compounds: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including benzene, phenol and formaldehyde.

• Other substances of concern: bisphenols, brominated flame retardants (BFRs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

The substances investigated will depend on the materials and processes at each pilot site.
